Mike Bouchet's "Argento Libre" @ Cumulus Studios!!!!!

Nathalie Karg's Cumulus Studios, known for it's collaborations with contemporary artists to create functional outdoor objects (blog 8/26/09, 12/8/09, 12/22/10), is presenting their newest designs at Design Basel next month.

This collection is created by sculptor Mike Bouchet, who has taken the ultimate consumer object, a shopping cart, and altered it to create the ultimate leisure object ...... a sun lounger!!! Bending the front and back panels of the shopping cart backwards or forwards, cutting the sides off, and re-mounting the child's seat as a head rest has resulted in this wonderful "chaise sculpture." The zinc- plated steel chair also comes a weatherproof foam cushion upholstered in a print designed by the artist.

In addition, there are four other designs available, each intended to add a different level of comfort and functionality. They include the chaise lounge with an umbrella, an armless chaise, a double chaise or love seat, a side table, and one with a speaker attached to connect an iPod.

Cumulus Studios does it again ......
Mike Bouchet's "Argento Libra" is absolutely divine!!!!
I can't wait to have all five pieces on my patio!!!
Soooooo chic!!!

Here are several pieces from Cumulus Studio's second collection of limited edition "functional outdoor objects."  Nathalie Karg has once again worked with a collection of innovative and exiting contemporary artists, creating a second collection of unique outdoor pieces. (See Aug. 26, 2009 post for first collection)

How divine would it be to cook on Nathan Mabry's "drum barbeque" ......  or play croquet using Mark Dion's "coffin croquet set!!!"  And of course, the birds in my backyard would be thrilled to live in Andrew Miller's "bird condominium," although they would  certainly be scared of Georg Baselitz's "eagle scarecrow!!!!"

There is no one who loves to "accessorate" more than I do ....... and being able to add my garden to the list of places I can "prop" excites me beyond belief!!!!! And there are even more outdoor pieces on Nathalie's website to fill the whole yard!!!

By the way ........ rumor has it there is a  POP UP in the works for this Christmas!!!! Will let you know where and when!!!

Three coins in this fountain???

In 2008 French-born landscape designer, Nathalie Karg, created a company, Cumulus Studios, that invites emerging and established contemporary artists to create functional objects for the outdoors. According to Nathalie "people are looking for whimsy.....gardens should be whimsical." Nathalie's close connection to the art world, she was formally an art advisor, makes her the perfect person to marry functional art and the garden. She has given the artist's complete freedom to create their own personal fantasy, the only limitation being functionality and weather resistance. The result is a delightfully witty selection of garden objects and furniture.

The first collection, previewed this past spring, included eighteen artists. The work is created in very small editions, three for the most part.  The works include.... Rikrit Tiravanija's polished steel and glass ping pong table; Jan Mancuska's metal beach umbrella encircled in text; Mary Heilmann's cabana green table inlaid with broken ceramic; Rob Wynne's mushroom table and chair; Aaron Young's gold chained tire swing; Ugo Rondinone's magical giant scarecrow. One of my particular favorites is this wonderful fountain, pictured above, that is created from tires, by Rob Pruitt. This ecologically correct fountain recycles it's own water, has a simple pump mechanism, and is an edition of 3. I would be thrilled to have it in my garden.......or in the center of my living room!!!!!!

The rest of the pieces in the first collection are equally as inspired.... and according to Nathalie we can expect a new collection for this coming fall!!!!
